First Starbucks Reserve in the Philippines

Last May 3, the Tomas Morato Dr. Laczano branch opened its doors to a new morning with a totally new look. It became the first Starbucks Reserve outlet in the country.

Categorized as belonging to the Second Wave of coffee, the brand appears to refuse to be part of a wave past the current 'Third Wave'. With the current trend of artisanal coffee defined to be hand crafted, made in small batches and traceable (not only to its country, but to the specific farm),  Starbucks seems to have made its headway to capitalize on it.

One of the four beans currently available is the Sumatra Blue Batak, described to be bold coffee that’s smooth and earthy with deep, syrupy body and sweet herbal notes

Here are some other beans that may be available seasonally and their descriptions.

Their menu included muffins and scones that are store exclusives.

Our beverages were prepared using the poured-over method. We were told that they have just these two to use for Reserve beans -- which made me wonder how they'd handle orders more than two at a time!

The server suggested for us to have the beverages black, then add milk and sugar when we preferred.

We tried the Sun Dried Ethiopia Yirgacheffe™ and Zambia Peaberry Terranova Estate -- both priced at around Php150 for Tall.

We were able to appreciate the tones and flavours described in our drinks: fruity for the Ethiopian, more body for the Zambian. Since my black coffee experiences before were just bitter shots that I try my hardest to tolerate, I found being able to taste lightness and fruity flavours in coffee awesome!

To complement our drinks, we ordered the following:
Spinach Tart
Spinach Artichoke Sandwich
Sausage Roll
Sausage Breakfast Sandwich
and a store exclusive chocolate muffin.
Chocolate Muffin [Php 95]
To better educate people on the concept, they held an invite-only coffee tasting today, May 12 for those who have shown interest by purchasing Reserve beverages.
