Valentine's Dinner at Yats Pampanga

Would you ever shell out Php1.5M for a taste of a rare, vintage bottle of cognac? If your answer is Yes, then Yats Restaurant and Wine Bar is the place for you.

On Valentine's Day, Nikko and I would usually skip going out on the actual day itself, or just head to the nearest restaurant we could find around Tomas Morato. This time, we skipped heading to Manila altogether and went for Yats in Clark, Pampanga. As recommended by Lieza, our Kapampangan friend, Yats is a French-Mediterranean restaurant known for their huge selection of wine.

Yats International is Hong Kong based wine supplier, offering not only vintages but also a selection fit for enthusiasts and wine lovers alike.

The cellar is open only to members and buyers. It features their rare vintages on display, with prices ranging from Php 120,000 labeled "Montrachet 1969", to Php 1.5M labeled "A. de Luze & fils 1848". The 1.5M cognac is suggested to have been illegally sold from France since they did not allow selling only until 1989.

1992 Screaming Eagle Php 588,000
1947 Ch. Cheval Blanc, St. Emilion Php 800,000
1945 Chateau Margaux Php 340,000
1961 Ch. Latour, Pauillac Php 230,000

Top-down from the Left:
Fine de Mouton Brandy Php 115,000
1899 Chateau d'Yquem Php 540,000
1929 Ch. Lafite Rothschild Php 550,000
1947 Chateau Petrus Php 1.1M

It was ironic however, that we didn't get to enjoy the alcohol variety that night. Nikko couldn't be drinking since he would be driving us home, while Lieza only had a single glass of wine. Lie is our welcome third date anytime.

For Valentine's evening, we were limited to select from their Four-Course Gourmet Valentine’s Dinner Menu (Php900 per person), or from their Wine-Paired Valentine’s Dinner Menu (Php1,900 per person). The menu is available at the bottom of this post.

We were served with exactly one piece of bread, with no suggestions from the servers if we wanted more. We found that a little weird.

Our appetizer of Pan Seared Prawns with Breaded and Baked Zucchini Chips tasted fresh with smoky flavour, and it would have been better if we had one more piece of it per plate considering the relatively small size of the prawns.

There was nothing special with the pumpkin soup, with no remarkable texture coming from the bacon bits.

The duck breast was served undercooked and I had to request for it to be returned to the kitchen, I couldn't tear the pieces apart! After another round on the pan, the duck came out just okay.

With the food being ordinary, the service further dampened our experience at Yats. The servers themselves were attentive, but then a caucasian man approached guests and claiming to be "with Yats" ruined our night. First, he came in the restaurant with a flashing camera taking photos of all the guests. Imagine that in a warmly lit, candlelit setting. In the middle of our meal, the man approached our table with a video camera asking how we're finding our food. We had to be polite and answer neutrally. It took a lot of effort for us to not get pissed off, considering it's Valentines evening. On top of that, while waiting for our dessert, this man sent the bill to our table! Nikko had to tell him nicely that we haven't had our dessert yet, and even joked if he was in a rush to drive us out. The man promptly apologized, but we had the idea that he didn't mean it at all.. after sending the bill back to us after Lieza finished her main course, and before her dessert. It was a good thing Nikko headed out to the restroom that time, or else he would have blown a fuse. Taking deep breaths, I just told the server "that man is very rude. I don't want to talk to him, but make sure to tell him I said that". We left without leaving any tips at all.

We are not intending to come back to this place for any occasions and at any time, and will not recommend this to other people as well. It may just be a good sightseeing or wine buying place.
